Welcome to Child Nutrition

Welcome to the Child Nutrition Department of the Sunflower County Consolidated School District. The Child Nutrition Department is committed to providing high-quality, nutritious meals for our students, faculty, and staff. We offer a variety of healthy choices to fuel students’ bodies and refresh their minds. Well-nourished students have higher test scores, increased school attendance, improved concentration, and improved classroom behavior. Students who are physically fit sleep better and can handle the physical and emotional challenges they encounter during the day. We are committed to providing healthy, fresh, delicious meals in a safe and clean environment.

Sunflower County Consolidated Schools' Food Service operations are administered through the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program.

The School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program are federal programs administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Mississippi Department of Education, and the local School Board. Comprehensive regulations are placed on the department in all areas, particularly the nutritional content of all foods available to students on each school campus. The goal of our department is to ensure our students receive the best health experience possible so they can continue to be #TheException!

All foods served at our schools meet state and federal nutritional requirements based on the United States Department of Agriculture USDA Dietary Guidelines. Our Child Nutrition Department strives to ensure hearty and healthy meals for our students each school day. Join us for breakfast and lunch. Our current menus are available near the bottom of the page. We welcome your helpful suggestions.

Barriers to Food and Nutrition Programs

The SCCSD Child Nutrition Department has been experiencing several barriers that have caused limited meal options and choices. Although our goal is to provide nutritious, healthy, presentable meals that our children and staff will enjoy, COVID-19 has led to food shortages and delayed deliveries from our vendors. As we face this dilemma, we ask for patience and understanding. Hopefully once these issues are resolved, we will have more food choices and options for our students!

Offer Versus Serve (OVS)

Offer Versus Serve (OVS) is a provision in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) that allows students to decline some of the food offered. The goals of OVS are to reduce food waste in the school meals programs while permitting students to decline foods they do not intend to eat. Sunflower County Consolidated School District schools participate in this provision.

Special Diets and Allergies

Special Diet Requirements
Regulations permit substitutions for children with special needs. A statement from a physician supporting a student’s condition and prescribed substitution must be submitted to the Child Nutrition Department as soon as diagnosed.
A medical statement for milk allergies is required for each school year.

For non-disabled individuals, the supporting medical statement must include the following:

1. Identification of the medical or other dietary need which restricts the child’s diet.
2. The food or foods to be omitted from the child’s diet and the food or choice of foods to be substituted.
3. Signature of a licensed medical authority.
NOTE: A medical statement from your child’s physician must be on file annually in order for us to meet their special dietary requirements.
• Medical Statement for Special Diets
• Medical Statement for Special Diets with Food Restrictions
Food Allergy
Generally, students with food allergies or intolerances do not have a disability as defined under 7 CFR 15b.3 of USDA’s nondiscrimination regulations, and school food authorities may, but are not required to, make substitutions for them. However, when in the licensed physician’s assessment, food allergies may result in severe, life-threatening(anaphylactic) reactions, the child’s condition would meet the definition of “disability,” and the substitutions prescribed by the licensed physician must be made.

USDA's Nutrition Standards Guidelines

In the Office of Child Nutrition, part of our goal is to foster happy, healthy and successful children by providing them with the right fuel they need for growing, learning and developing. This is accomplished by offering our children Nutrition Education resources along with nutrient-rich foods and beverages that follow USDA’s Nutrition Standards Guidelines. When children fill up on proper high quality nutrition, their bodies and brains will naturally have less room for empty calorie foods that offer them no nutritional value (i.e. soft drinks, chips, candy, desserts etc.).

Selecting foods that are beneficial to our everyday health can assist in the reduction of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Healthy eating habits coupled with daily physical activity can lead to a lifetime of good health and well-being. Learning about healthy eating habits can occur in: classrooms, school cafeterias, libraries, health fairs and home environments.
